Although, A megacity is defined by the United Nations as a city that has a population of 10 million or more people.

At present, India is home to five megacities, with over 10 million population, but by 2030 this number will go up to seven. Delhi will continue to be the second-most populous city in the world till 2030, adding a staggering 9.6 million people to its population — the most in any megacity.

The facts have been revealed in the 2016 World Cities Report issued by the UN’s department of economic and social affairs. Here is the list of Mega Cities in India 2021

1. Delhi

The ancient historical city of Delhi in northern India also coined New Delhi. The Union Territory of Delhi is the capital of the country of India, officially known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). It is bordered by the state of Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. The NCT covers an area of 1,484 square kilometers (573 sq mi).

Delhi is the fifth most populous city in the world and is the largest city in all of India.  the National Capital Territory (NCT) of India, is a large metropolitan area in India.

According to the 2021 census, Delhi’s city proper population was over 11*** million. The city has a population density of 29,259.12***** people per square km, Delhi has a skewed female-to-male ratio, with 866 women for every 1,000 men. The city has a literacy rate of 86% (91% for men and 81% for women). Hindi is the most commonly spoken language (81%), followed by Punjabi (7%) and Urdu (6%). Nearly 82% of the population practices Hinduism, while 12.86% practices Islam. Christianity accounts for 0.87% of the population, while Buddhism accounts for just 0.11%. (To be Updated).

2. Mumbai

Mumbai is the capital of the State of Maharashtra in India. Its official name was Bombay until 1995. Mumbai comprises two regions, the city district which covers an area of 233 square miles, and the more extensive Mumbai metropolitan area with a total area of 1681.5 square miles. According to the United Nations, as of 2018, Mumbai was the second most populous city in India after Delhi and the seventh most populous city in the world with a population of 19.98 million. As per the Indian government population census of 2021, Mumbai was the second most populous city in India with an estimated city-proper population of 12.5*** million living under Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. In 2008, Mumbai was named an alpha world city.

3. Kolkata

Kolkata or Calcutta (the official name until 2001) is the capital of the East Indian state of West Bengal. It’s located on the east bank of the Hooghly River. The city nicknamed the “City of Joy” is widely regarded as the “cultural capital” of India.

Kolkata is the Seventh most populous city in the world and is the 3rd largest metropolitan area in India.

According to the India Census 2021, Kolkata has an estimated population of 4.6 million***. The largest urban area that includes the suburbs has a population of more than 14.3 million***, which makes it India’s 3rd most populous metropolitan area.

4. Chennai

Chennai is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is the biggest cultural, economic and educational center of south India.

According to the 2021 Indian census, it is the sixth-most populous city and fourth-most populous urban agglomeration in India.

According to the India Census 2021, The total population of the Chennai UA/Metropolitan region is 8,653,521. The male population of which is 4,358,612 while the female population is 4,294,909. (Updated Soon)

5. Bengaluru

Bengaluru is the capital of the south Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in southern India, on the Deccan Plateau at an elevation of over 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level. Bengaluru is also is known as the Silicon Valley of India. it is the third most populous city and the 5th most populous urban area.

According to the India Census 2021, The total population of the Bangalore UA/Metropolitan region is 8,520,435. The male population of which is 4,433,855 while the female population is 4,086,580. (Updated Soon)
